The Part That Determines Whether the New System Works
A brand-new, correctly sized air conditioner connected to undersized, leaky, or nonexistent ductwork will underperform no matter how good the equipment is - airflow is what actually delivers cooling to each room, and ductwork is the part of the system most often overlooked when homeowners in Kirkwood, MO focus entirely on choosing new equipment instead. For homes converting from window units or a ductless setup to central air, or replacing decades-old ductwork that was never sized for today's equipment, new ductwork installation is what makes the rest of the system deliver on its rated performance.
Designing Ductwork Around the Equipment and the Home
Ductwork installation is planned specifically around the new system and the home's layout, not installed generically off a standard template:
- Manual D duct design calculating trunk and branch sizing based on the load calculation for the new equipment, not a rule-of-thumb estimate applied across the board
- Supply and return balancing so every room gets airflow proportional to its actual cooling load, not just the rooms closest to the air handler
- Sealed and insulated duct runs, since unsealed ductwork routinely loses 20% or more of conditioned air before it ever reaches a vent
- Routing through attics, crawlspaces, or soffits planned to minimize exposed runs and unnecessary bends that reduce airflow efficiency over the length of the run
Undersized return ductwork is one of the most common - and most overlooked - causes of a new AC system underperforming, since restricted return airflow chokes the whole system regardless of how correctly the equipment itself was sized and selected.
What This Looks Like for an Existing Home
Retrofitting ductwork into a home that previously had none, or replacing ductwork that's decades old, involves more coordination than new construction - working around existing framing, finished ceilings, and occupied living space throughout the process. Fort Worth AC Repair plans duct routing to minimize disruption to finished areas wherever possible, and every completed run is pressure-tested for leaks before being connected to the new AC system, not just visually inspected and signed off.
